Sustainable Solution for Noise PollutionHanson Pipe & Precast Provides Sustainable Solution for Noise Pollution

Project Description

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, which runs from southern Brooklyn, NY, to the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, NY, is a portion of Interstate 278. According to New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway handles approximately 160,000 vehicles per day through the borough of Brooklyn and approximately 120,000 vehicles per day through Queens.

Sustainable Solution for Noise PollutionHanson Pipe & Precast was selected to develop noise barriers to control the sound of the constant traffic away from the surrounding businesses and neighborhoods. The use of noise barriers in areas of high traffic density and urban development helps create more sustainable neighborhoods and increases employee productivity and comfort in local businesses.

Architectural double sided noise barriers which included intricate multi-plane arch facades were custom created to include an inlay arch spanning multiple panels. Hanson fabricated the customized liner textures for casting with self consolidating concrete (SCC). This was the first noise barrier project approved by NYSDOT with use of SCC.
