Reuse of Hanson Pipe & Precast products to help train search and rescue dogs in Glendale, Arizona
Project Description
Hanson Pipe & Precast demonstrated its dedication to sustainability and commitment to Glendale and the surrounding communities by the reuse of its concrete products for new training areas being developed for the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center. Hanson Pipe & Precast’s El Mirage, Ariz., facility donated products for use in a dynamic debris field specifically designed to train search and rescue dogs in hazardous situations. The goal of the facility is to train search and rescue dogs from throughout the state and eventually become a National K-9 Search and Rescue Certification site.
“It is o ur responsibility to take any opportunity, even outside our industry, to contribute to the safety and well being of communities in which we live and work,” said Richard Manning, president Hanson Building Products North America. “At Hanson Building Products we continually look for innovative ways to utilize our building products.”
Hanson Pipe & Precast’s El Mirage facility donated 259 tons of large diameter concrete pipe and box culverts for the dynamic debris field, which will also be utilized for technical rescue training by creating three safe zones for trench rescue.
“Hanson’s generosity, time and expertise in the area of precast concrete products will enhance our ability to provide realistic training to search and rescue dogs throughout the United States,” said Darrell Johnston, deputy chief, Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center.
The Glendale Training Center serves a variety of regional public safety training needs including basic fire and police training, which has been available since the facility’s opening in 2006. The facility will enhance their ability to provide advanced technical rescue, hazardous materials and search and rescue dog training as part of a three-phase growth plan throughout the next several years. Hanson plans to be of service to the Glendale facility - currently in stage two - throughout its development.
The Hanson Pipe & Precast El Mirage facility was presented with a plaque in April 2010 by the cities of Avondale, Glendale, Peoria and Surprise, as well as the Maricopa County Community College District in Arizona for its donation, and was recognized as being a contributing member of the community.
“We are glad to provide the proper materials and products needed to prepare for real-life emergencies,” added Donn Aspey, plant manager, Hanson Pipe & Precast El Mirage facility.
